How did China become a central player in the global economy, and what does that mean for workers and businesses today? This intergenerational series brings together undergraduate students and OLLI participants to explore these questions through discussion, interactive activities, and real-world perspectives. Topics include globalization and the economic connections between China and the United States. A guest speaker will provide additional insight into current developments. No prior background in economics is required.

In addition to neuroscience and biology of different disease states, the class equally covers the public health, societal, and individual impacts of each condition. The OLLI members will join for days where I will lead a portion of class and then a group of the Drake undergraduates will also plan and coordinate some activities. On these collaborative days, there will be a brief orientation and short “lecture” that I will provide, then I will lead some structured discussion, and finally the student group will facilitate an interactive conversation and group work. This class will provide an intergenerational perspective on diseases and conditions that have very different salience and impact across the lifespan, such as dementia and autism spectrum disorders.

What makes a short story work—and how do writers get started? This course invites participants to read like writers, experiment with story building exercises, and explore how raw ideas become shaped into art through invention, discussion, revision, and polish. We’ll read classic and contemporary short fiction, share work with peers, and consider how new tools, including AI, support and complicate the writing process. Above all, we’ll approach storytelling as a democratic act: anyone can begin.

This course is an introduction to building a restorative community. Restorative justice is a perspective that views crime as a harm against people and the community, which needs to be addressed through the involvement of offenders, victims, and community members. Restorative practices are extensions of those ideas in contexts such as schools, social work, businesses, churches, and families. A restorative community shifts away from punitive responses and focuses on relationship-centered practices, empathy, healing, and accountability. Shared classes with OLLI participants and Drake students will include an overview of key ideas, small group discussion, and circle dialogues. We will explore specific formats for community listening and conflict resolution to help facilitate relationship building and a safe place to discuss difficult topics.
